Johannes Brahms · Symphony No. 4 E minor op. 98

Goethe's pair of poems “Meeresstille” (Calm Sea) and “Glückliche Fahrt” (Happy Voyage) inspired Mendelssohn Bartholdy, among others, to create a concert overture based on the verses. It translates Goethe’s poetic descriptions of nature into appropriate tones, often onomatopoeically and always true to detail. Songs, in the oeuvre of Richard Strauss, lay the bridge from his instrumental music to the opera. Near the end of his life, he wrote four orchestral songs, based on poems by Hermann Hesse and Joseph von Eichendorff, which were edited after the composer's death as Four Last Songs – a cycle of enchanting impressions and a cheerful goodbye to life and nature. Finally, Brahms’ 4th symphony, which oscillates between plaintive friendliness, an almost violent hilarity and pensive introspection, will make for an exalted farewell.
