Karl Goldmark (1830 - 1915)  Concert Overture "Im Frühling" op. 36 (1889)
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 - 1791) Horn Concerto No. 4 KV 495 in E flat major (1786)
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827)  Symphony No. 2 in D major op. 36 (1801/1802)

Karl Goldmark was exceptionally popular and renowned as a teacher in his time. His best-known work is the opera Die Königin von Saba (The Queen of Sheba), which premiered in 1875. Karl Kraus acknowledged that, since Richard Wagner’s death, he was the greatest musical dramatist alive. Our concert features his overture “Im Frühling”, hailed by a contemporary critic with the remark that it was not boring chamber music because Goldmark simply opened the window and said: “Here is spring for you, take it as a gift.”
Mozart’s larger-than-life horn concertos have been in every professional player’s repertoire to this day. At the time when he wrote them, valves hadn’t been invented yet, and the horn was not considered a suitable solo instrument because of its restricted possibilities and difficulties in intonation. However, hornists like Joseph Leutgeb, a friend of Mozart’s, commanded playing techniques to partly compensate for these shortcomings. Because of this, Mozart was able to make his concertos richer and more varied and thus set a very high standard. We release our audience into the summer with Beethoven’s Second and the catchy theme from the final movement of the Horn Concerto.
