Known and less known baroque and classical pieces
Few people in Germany know the Polish composer Wojciech Dankowski. He was a contemporary of Mozart and Beethoven and wrote mainly spiritual music, but also two symphonies, of which we will perform the one in D major. Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 is a classical all-time hit. Everybody knows the famous opening theme, it is played in commercials and popular as a ringtone. Which may be the reason why many people fail to notice its sometimes gloomy and melancholic character today. After all, there is a complex composition behind the captivating simplicity of the music.
The young violonist Mariam Abouzahra already enchanted our audience last season. This year, she will be playing Bach’s violin concerto in E major, which contains some challenges not only in its solo part but also in the interaction between the soloist and the orchestra. Telemann, in his Concerto Polonais, reflects the manifold musical impressions gathered during his stay at the court of Żary and his journeys to Kraków and Pszczyna. It was there that he got to know Polish and Moravian folklore, an experience that kept on influencing him for the rest of his life.
