Antonín Dvóřak (1841 – 1904) • Symphony No. 9 in E minor op. 95 "From the New World" (1893)
A top-ranking orchestra from Bucharest dedicating a concert to Czech composers – what a demonstration of truly European spirit! Almost all European languages have the same word for music, except Czech, where it is hudba. A nice and ancient word that goes to the heart of Czech music as embodied in the works of Smetana und Dvořák. The Bartered Bride was Smetana’s most successful opera and is considered a national opus by many. Dvořák wrote both his Cello Concerto and his Ninth Symphony in America. The Concerto, a finely attuned dialogue between the soloist and the orchestra, gives room to virtuosity and the dark timbre of the violoncello. In the Ninth, he takes inspiration from the music of his American host country but absorbs it completely in his own musical creativity and expression.
