Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy ∙ Violin Concerto in E minor op. 64
Franz Schubert ∙ Symphony no. 6 in C major D589
We start our romantic sightseeing tour with a singular masterpiece, namely Mendelssohn-Bartholdy’s Violin Concerto in E minor. Conceived almost as a song without words, it poses the most demanding challenges to any soloist, ranging from the virtuoso to the sentimental. Viviane Hagner should be able to deliver an apt interpretation of the work, including the meditative andante as well as the witty and sparkling finale. Franz Schubert’s C major symphony, on the other hand, draws on a variety of influences and alternates between elated Italian insouciance, a likeness to folksongs and scintillating ambiguity – in short, a truly experimental composition.
