Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy · “The Legend of the Fair Melusine“, Concert Overture op. 32
Johannes Brahms · Violin Concerto in D major op. 77
Alexander von Zemlinsky · “The Little Mermaid“, Fantasia for Orchestra
Whoever makes contact with a mermaid or Melusine must keep relationship agreements and obey taboos, or they will take various risks, like the Fair Melusine, who has to spend one day per week as a mermaid. Such is the punishment imposed by her father, and when her secret is revealed, she must keep that shape forever. Mendelssohn saw his musical rendering of the theme as a depiction of moods rather than a story, while Alexander von Zemlinsky has equipped his symphonic fantasia, after the fairy tale The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen, with scintillating sounds and voluptuous abundance. And Brahms‘s Violin Concerto, one of the most famous exponents of the genre, also has a fairytale touch.
