Georg Friedrich Händel (1685 – 1759) • Messiah Oratorio for 4 soloists, choir and orchestra (1741)
Georg Friedrich Händel composed his Messiah in less than three weeks and earned fulminant appraisal at its 1742 premiere in Dublin. Not only did he introduce the genre of the oratorio to England, but Messiah was a novelty for another reason as well – it had no storyline. The lyrics revolve around Jesus Christ and reflect his life from different perspectives, but the Messiah does not speak himself. Consequently, the work, beyond its choral movements, is centred on arias, and that is where Händel is able to pull all the stops and let his opera-trained musical language speak with full force. What makes the Messiah so intriguing to this day is exactly this ambivalence between the notions of being a sacral work brought to the concert hall and being an opera to be performed at church.
