Johann Strauß the Son was very popular at his lifetime and has been a fixture in Austria’s cultural memory to this day, not least owing to his Blue Danube waltz, which is considered the anthem of Vienna by many.

The Staatskapelle Halle orchestra visits Chorin with a bundle of highlights from this ingenious Austro-pop star of the 19th century: the music has puffing and whistling steam locomotives, popping champagne corks, sparkling wine and running tears.

Amidst this display of fireworks, we hear the overture from La belle Hélène by Jacques Offenbach, the French master of musical comedy. And then, as though from another world, comes the third movement of Brahms’s 3rd symphony, reminiscent of a waltz or a stylised menuet.
