“It comes scurrying up as if from far away and takes two run-ups to gain its full momentum,” wrote Mozart biographer Herbert Abert to describe the agile and cheerful Figaro overture. “But then it starts stirring high and low with laughter, giggling and triumph, … and speeds towards a jubilant finale.” One and a half months after his 19th birthday, while still a concert master at the Archbishop’s court in Salzburg, Mozart completed his 1st Violin Concerto in B♭ major, later filed as KV 207. Bottesini’s Grand Duo concertante for violin, double bass and strings is one of his most famous and most performed concertos and still enchants audiences today. A work between tradition and innovation is Beethoven’s 2nd Symphony in D major with its sharp contrasts between loud and quiet passages and some dramatic culminations.
