The Mendelssohn Chamber Orchestra Leipzig sees itself as an ambassador for the musician who shaped European musical life in the 19th century so crucially, and an authority on his work. As as boy, Mendelssohn composed his symphony movement in C minor for his father's family music events. Later on, when he was director of music at the Leipzig Gewandhaus, he revolutionised concert life and supported young musicians. He not only had a huge influence on Robert Volkmann's work but also became a mentor for Niels Gade. A true cosmopolitan, he made the acquaintance of Hector Berlioz in Rome. However, the French composer's admiration for Mendelssohn remained a one-way affair.
