Staatskapelle Weimar

Sofja Gülbadamova · piano
Alevtina Ioffe · conductor

Friedrich Witt · Symphony in C major
Johann Nepomuk Hummel · Freudenfest Overture in D major S148
Johann Nepomuk Hummel · “Oberon’s Magic Horn” for Piano and Orchestra op. 116
Franz Krommer · No. 4 in C minor op. 102

Pianist Sofja Gülbadamova and conductor Alevtina Ioffe, both from Russia and engaged for Staatskapelle Weimar’s concert programme, make it very clear that Beethoven was not the all-dominant titan of Vienna’s musical life in his day. As late as 1844, the French musicologist François-Joseph Fétis wrote: “Had Beethoven been born 25 years later, he would have had to cede the fame of being the era’s first instrumental composer to Hummel, uncontestedly so.” And until 1968, the symphony in C major written by his contemporary Friedrich Witt was believed to be one of Beethoven’s early works.
