Gustav Mahler • Symphony no. 4 in G major (version for chamber orchestra)
About his 4th symphony with its soprano solo part, Gustav Mahler said that the musical path to paradise led through the realm of childlike simplicity. This may account for the fact that some of the melodies are reminiscent of well-known nursery rhymes. The work was conceived in 1899/1900 in his summer refuge at Lake Wörthersee. Its attitude is thoroughly cheerful, its tone deliberately unsophisticated. It starts with rhythmic bell sounds which unexpectedly give way to the graceful main theme. The second movement sees “death play its fiddle“, as Mahler put it, but in such a good-natured and benign way as though it had risen from a children’s book. The slow movement continues in this way with an Alpine folksong, while the finale paints a naive picture of life in heaven as an otherwordly land of milk and honey, which you might find rather utopian.
