“Nature and Art,” says the motto of the season, “all at once find each other”, and so they do in this programme. Although Beethoven did not think much of ballet, he set the ancient Prometheus tale to music under the terms of the Enlightenment. The swirling, cheerful overture anticipates the happy ending of the plot. Soloist Yuri Revich should be an adequate advocate for Mendelssohn’s brilliantly elegiac violin concerto as well as for the world premiere of his own homage to the “Chorin Forest” and the spirited Carmen suite arranged by Pablo de Sarasate. Kodály, composer of the Dances, spent his childhood in the Hungarian village of Galánta, where he was exposed to the sounds of the local gypsy band. In 1933, when he had to write a suitable orchestral work for the 80th anniversary of the Budapest Philharmonic Society, he drew on these memories.
