Between Orient and Occident, or: music as a connective power
Cairo Steps are an ensemble of musicians from various countries, all of them crossing cultural boundaries and all of them masters of their instruments: the oud, an Arabian short-neck lute, nay and duduk flutes as well as instruments of European origin such as the piano, saxophone, bass or percussion.
Cairo Step’s music is a cross-over of traditional Egyptian and Oriental rhythms and modern jazz, improvisation, classical music and contemporary sounds. Each musician contributes his own musical background, and all of them add up to a convincing blend of strong unisono melodies, virtuosic solos and meditative soundscapes that draws listeners in. Their vision of crossing cultural, political and religious boundaries and building bridges between the Occident and the Orient seems to be sorely needed these days.
