Modest Mussorgsky ∙ Pictures at an Exhibition for piano solo (excerpts)
Modest Mussorgsky was deeply shocked by the death of his friend, the painter and architect Viktor Hartmann, in 1873. A year later, Vladimir Stasov, spokesman for the St. Petersburg composers’ circle “The Mighty Little Bunch”, organized a memorial exhibition of Hartmann’s pictures in his honour. For Mussorgsky, who liked to be inspired by ideas of realia, it became the occasion to write his piano cycle “Pictures at an Exhibition”, which became more than a series of static impressions. Mussorgsky’s imagination enriched the images with action, linking them with a promenade that marks the viewer’s path from one picture to the next and reflects changing emotions and thoughts. Maurice Ravel orchestrated this cycle in a varied and sophisticated way in 1922. It became a hit around the world.
