"Wild Violas"
Viola Company

When violists begin to rock...
Music from Johann Sebastian Bach to Michael Jackson, from Duke Ellington to Metallica,
from Queen to Paul Hindemith
Although it may seem that the viola ist just a bigger violin, simply tuned a fifth lower, there are worlds between the two instruments. The viola is distinguished by its special timbre, alternatingly described as warm and dark, dry, hoarse and husky or wild.
The Bratschen Company has five of these instruments, and they play cover versions of famous pop, jazz, renaissance, baroque and modern pieces, from Johann Sebastian Bach to Michael Jackson, from Duke Ellington to Metallica, from Queen to Purcell and many others. It will be exciting to hear how the musicians will depart from the homogeneous viola sound in their arrangements, interpret hits such as Michael Jackson’s Billy Jean and translate the sound of electric guitars, drums and synthesizers into their setting. Or how they will turn Paul Hindemith’s wild fourth movement of his Sonata for Viola solo into a five-part piece and place it at the edge of heavy metal.
